The thin silver trim that borders every marker is highly polished, and held at a certain angle, you can see just how clean and sharp these lines are. The dial is about as visually engrossing as any black dial dive watch can be, but with a few notable finishes. While it is possibly the longest crown I have ever seen, it remains visually balanced when viewed with the entire watch. Lodged in the midst of all this unexpected fanciness, is the heavily knurled destro crown poking out at the 7 position.
This isn’t to say the case isn’t interesting in itself: the way the left side of the mid-case gently peaks to form the crown guard is incredibly elegant, and the high degree of polishing applied to the case also enhances the gracefulness of the existing contours. Looking away from the bezel for a moment, we can see that the tapered lugs end at a slant, helping to elongate the case and allowing the bezel to retain the majority of the viewers’ attention. However, I have since come to enjoy its unapologetic and reassuring loudness. To some it may sound cheap or janky, and honestly, the sound it made did nothing to help my initial impressions of build quality. As you would expect from such an aggressively spiked bezel, it is incredibly secure to turn, and while the bezel action is by no means smooth, it does make a very confident clicking sound. As the source of its nickname, the alternating serrated-smooth edge provides not only ample design interest, but also a unique tactile experience. Fugu Case Designįirst we have the famed Fugu bezel. I still get a kick out of its looks, and as far as case design is concerned, the Fugu a tier above the rest of its competition. It was by far the most interesting dive watch I had personally experienced, and now almost another two months later, my impression has not changed. However, the one that Citizen enthusiasts ought to check out the NY0119-19X, with black bezel and full-lume dial, which is limited to 2,000 pieces.When I first wrote about the Citizen NY0080-12E around two months ago, I was raving about its visual impact. There is little to separate between three non-limited models – white dial with black bezel (NY0118-11A), black dial with black and blue bezel (NY0111-11E) and black dial with red and blue bezel (NY0110-13E) – which all emanate a rough-and-ready, utilitarian demeanour. And like the earlier versions of the Asia Limited Promasters, the new collection is powered by Citizen’s automatic Calibre 8203 movement, and touts 200m water resistance and ISO 6425 complicance standard for diving watches. Where the second-generation Asia Limited Promaster NY009 roll-outs were distinguished by their metal bracelets, the new Asia Limited Promaster NY011 reverts to the first-gen’s polyurethane straps featuring ribbed profile near the lugs and printed ‘No Decompression Limit’ table. These include 44mm cases (up from 42mm for the first- and second-gen ‘Fugus’) sapphire crystal dials instead of mineral crystal ones and double the number of teeth (120, from 60 teeth) in the unidirectional bezel’s click system. This year’s third-generation remake, the Asia Limited Promaster NY011, while still offering the same throwback style and entry-level price enticement, has been improved with a number of new features. We were particularly enamoured by the watch’s legacy (the 1989 original NY004 was once used by the Italian Navy), unique design with the knurled bezel, and attractive price tag.
